The German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock sees Russia as isolated within the United Nations due to its war on Ukraine.
Baerbock stated in remarks to the German news agency (dpa) in New York last night (local time) at the conclusion of her participation in the United Nations General Assembly: "Moscow has received clear criticism in the General Assembly and the Security Council for its ongoing violation of the United Nations Charter."
She added: "Russia has been isolated," pointing out that Russia "faced strong headwinds from African, Latin American, and Asian countries when it attempted to challenge important statements on sustainable development and global health."
Baerbock participated in United Nations General Assembly meetings since last Sunday. While German Chancellor Olaf Scholz concluded his talks at the UN on Wednesday evening and returned to Berlin, Baerbock remained for an additional day.
Yesterday, the minister spoke, among other things, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council about the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in the South Caucasus, which is predominantly inhabited by Armenians and occupied by Azerbaijani forces. In the evening, Baerbock returned to Germany on a scheduled flight.
In light of discussions about the need for a radical reform of the United Nations, Baerbock said: "Many people rightly feel that the heartbeat of the United Nations is no longer functioning properly," emphasizing that it is extremely important for the world to gather in New York, "to steer it, even a little, back on the right path."
She said: "This busy week has shown me that the vast majority of the world wants more international cooperation and wants to find common solutions."
