Georgia: 11 people killed in a landslide

11 people lost their lives due to a landslide in the tourist town of Shovi, northwest Georgia, while about 30 are still missing.

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs stated in a statement today, Friday, that 11 bodies have been found during the ongoing search and rescue efforts following the disaster that occurred yesterday, Thursday, in Shovi, located in the mountainous Racha region.

For his part, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who arrived in the area to closely monitor the search and rescue operations, announced that a national day of mourning would be declared on August 7 due to the loss of life.

Garibashvili clarified that 210 people have been rescued from the area and moved to safe locations, and efforts are still ongoing to reach about 30 individuals who are missing.

The Prime Minister also noted that the army would participate in the search and rescue operations.

Due to the landslide that occurred in Shovi, roads and bridges leading to the area have been damaged, and telephone communications have been disrupted. Rescue teams can only access the area by helicopter.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that a team of 400 individuals has begun search and rescue operations following the landslide.
