The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Thursday, that those behind the coup in Niger "do not have the authority" to demand the departure of the French ambassador in Niamey.
The ministry added: "We continuously assess the safety of our embassy and its operational conditions."
The military council that seized power in Niger last month also stated that the French ambassador to Niger, Sylvain Ité, no longer enjoys diplomatic immunity and that the police have been instructed to expel him.
Additionally, the military council ordered the ambassador on Friday to leave the country within 48 hours in response to actions by the French government that it said "contradict the interests of Niger."
