A meteorology expert at Environment Canada said that Newfoundland is expected to experience rough waves and heavy rain starting Monday as Hurricane Ernesto approaches the area.
Chris Fogarty from the Canadian Hurricane Centre expects the storm to weaken as it moves over the cooler waters of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Ernesto made landfall in Bermuda on Saturday and weakened to a tropical storm, but regained strength on Sunday and was classified as a hurricane again by that evening.
Fogarty confirmed that Ernesto is likely to bring large waves to the Avalon Peninsula and heavy rain to the St. John's area, expected to hit late Monday and continue through Tuesday.
He added that those living near the coast should prepare for rough waves, and residents in the southern part of the Avalon Peninsula should be ready for potential damage to docks, breakwaters, and other structures near the waterfront.
Fogarty noted that the timing of Ernesto's arrival is expected to lessen damage, as the storm is predicted to pass through the area at low tide.
Due to the incoming storm, Marine Atlantic has canceled the ferry service scheduled for 5:30 PM between Argentia, Newfoundland, and North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
