New media entrepreneur and improver in Quebec, Daniel Langlois, is believed to have been found dead in Dominica, alongside his partner Dominic Marchand, according to reports from the Caribbean country.
Both had been missing for a few days and were found in a burned car according to Dominica News Online, and local sources contacted by Radio Canada, including the resort they both managed.
For his part, a spokesperson for Colibri Ridge Resort said in a statement to Radio Canada that the entire community on the island is in mourning following the devastating incident that occurred on Thursday, November 30.
Simon Walsh, project manager at Resilient Dominica – a non-profit organization under the Daniel Langlois Foundation – also confirmed the reports in an email sent to Radio-Canada.
Jacqueline Dubeini, honorary consul of Belgium in Dominica, said she last saw the couple in early November near the river. She says her last memories with the couple, with whom she felt she shared a bond as her mother was French Canadian, were full of laughter and smiles.
She also told Radio Canada: "It was always wonderful to see Daniel and Dominic." Dominic might have been a more outgoing person in public and had a warm and friendly personality, and her smile lit up the room.
She added that the community was saddened by the loss.
She also said there is a mix of emotions ranging from anger to distress because these two couples did a lot to elevate and enhance Dominica and Dominicans.
This year, Langlois received a Distinguished Service Award for his contribution to sustainable development in Dominica during a ceremony commemorating the country's Independence Day in November.
There will be a candlelight vigil by kayak later this week to commemorate the couple, according to Walsh.
The police have detained three suspects and are questioning them, according to Dominica News Online. CBC News has reached out to local authorities for more details.
Global Affairs Canada also said in a statement to CBC News that it is aware of the deaths of two Canadians in Dominica and is also in contact with local authorities for further information.
Langlois had founded Softimage, a company that produced 3D animation software used in films like Jurassic Park.
Loudon Owen recalls when Langlois first came to him in Toronto carrying his vision for Softimage seeking investments to grow the business. Owen says that at the time, Langlois had a Bill Gates dream.
