The military council that took power in Niger reported today, Sunday, that it rejected all proposals put forward by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarding the return of President Mohamed Bazoum.
A responsible source stated to the Associated Press that the discussions that took place between ECOWAS and the leaders of the Nigerien military council did not yield any significant results.
Hundreds of people are gathering at the parliament square in Niger's capital, Niamey, to support the army and denounce the cessation of military threats from ECOWAS, chanting slogans in support of the army’s position and rejecting foreign intervention.
Earlier, a responsible source explained on Saturday that the West African countries' meeting did not yield much and caused significant pressure on soldiers due to regional sanctions for their refusal to reinstate Bazoum as the elected president of the country, noting that these meetings lasted about two hours.
This meeting is the first since the outbreak of clashes in Niger, where General Abdourahamane Tchiani, head of the military council, is present with ECOWAS, following numerous attempts for his attendance after he had refused.
