The Emir of Kuwait, Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, dissolved the parliament today, Tuesday, April 18, 2023, calling for the organization of new elections.
The Crown Prince of Kuwait, Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, said in a speech delivered on behalf of the Emir: "Based on the constitution, we have decided to dissolve the 2020 National Assembly, which was reinstated by the Constitutional Court ruling, and return to the people in new elections in the upcoming period."
He also added: "Exiting the repercussions of the current political scene requires returning to the constitution as the reference and governing document, rallying around the people, and implementing their desires."
He continued: "Accordingly, based on all that has been mentioned, adherence to the constitution, and out of respect for the popular will, we have decided to dissolve the 2020 National Assembly reinstated by the Constitutional Court ruling constitutionally, based on Article 107 of the constitution, and to call for general elections in the coming months."
He also clarified that "the reason for dissolving the National Assembly is to uphold the popular will, which requires returning to it in new elections," accompanied by "necessary political and legal reforms to move the state to a phase of discipline and legal reference," but he did not specify these reforms.
On April 9, a new government, the seventh in three years, was announced, headed by Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, less than four months after the previous government's resignation following a political crisis with the parliament.
Last March, the Constitutional Court ruled the nullity of the legislative elections held last year, which the opposition had won, due to appeals questioning the validity of the related constitutional decrees, and ruled in favor of reinstating the previous parliament.
