It is scheduled for the President of the Moroccan Senate, Na'am Miyara, to make an official visit to the Israeli Parliament next Thursday, according to the Israeli Knesset spokesperson's office on Sunday.
Miyara's trip will be the first visit by a Moroccan official to the Israeli legislative body, as well as one of the highest visits by a foreign Muslim politician to the Knesset.
The Knesset Speaker, Amir Ohana, who officially invited the President of the Moroccan Council of Advisors, Miyara, stated that the trip is a "preliminary visit that witnesses the new era established in Israeli-Moroccan relations."
The visit of the Moroccan Senate President will follow mutual relationship-building steps taken by Israel in recent months. Importantly, Israel recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara territory last July, over which Rabat has fought the insurgents.
In June, Ohana made the first visit by a Knesset speaker to the Moroccan Parliament, and a delegation of Israeli legislators visited the kingdom this summer as part of a broader parliamentary forum.
Israeli relations with Morocco, normalized in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, have experienced disruptions. In June, Rabat canceled its plans to host the Negev Forum this summer in protest against announcements regarding Israeli settlements.
A meeting of the foreign ministers of Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, Egypt, and the United States has also been postponed several times since it was initially scheduled for March, in light of rising tensions between Israelis and Palestinians and some Arab leaders' concerns about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hardline government.
But Ohana, himself the son of Jewish immigrants from Morocco, said that Miyara's visit reflects a "reality filled with hope, teaching us the possibilities of expanding circles of peace in the Middle East." In addition to leading the Moroccan Senate, Miyara also heads the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, a representative organization for regional legislative bodies. He is accompanied on this visit by several legislators from the region and will meet with Ohana.
