The Eiffel Tower closed today, Wednesday, December 27, 2023, to visitor traffic on the centenary of the death of its founder due to a strike by its workers as part of ongoing contract negotiations with the tower's management.
According to the "Agence France-Presse," quoting the tower's management, tourists can still access the glass walkway beneath the tower, but the way to the tower is closed until further notice.
For his part, a spokesman for the tower's management, who did not reveal his name, said the strike was announced before the start of contract negotiations with the City of Paris, which owns the 134-year-old monument.
According to the spokesman, the tower usually receives about 20,000 visitors daily at this time of year, noting that a special musical show is still scheduled to be broadcast on the anniversary of the death of Gustave Eiffel, the tower's founder, today, Wednesday, via social media networks and French television, which was recorded previously.
Union representatives did not comment immediately, and it was not clear how long the strike would continue.
The Eiffel Tower, one of the most visited sites around the world, usually opens its doors daily throughout the year, despite strikes that occur from time to time.
