The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said today, Friday, that a group of senior Muslim donors in Canada have decided to no longer raise funds for the ruling Liberal Party due to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau not calling for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in Gaza.
The group announced its withdrawal from the Laurier Club, the upper tier of donors, due to Trudeau apparently showing little interest in international law or the children of Gaza.
The corporation quoted the group as saying in a letter to the party, "With broken hearts, we must leave the Laurier Club. The idea that this situation will be forgotten within two years is a risky and unwise strategy for the party."
Polls show the left-leaning Liberals lagging behind the Conservatives ahead of the next elections scheduled for October 2025.
Trudeau has stated in multiple remarks that Israel has the right to defend itself after the deadly attack launched by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7, but he has gradually softened his tone as the death toll from the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has increased.
Last month, he said that "the killing of women, children, and infants" in the Palestinian territory must stop.
Muslims make up about five percent of Canada's population of 40 million people.
