The Toronto Maple Leafs legend Bob Baun passed away this morning, Tuesday, at the age of 86, according to the National Hockey League.

The defenseman who grew up in Toronto, nicknamed Boomer, played in the National Hockey League for 17 seasons, spending 14 of them with the Leafs.

The league said in a post on social media, "We extend our deepest condolences to Bob's family, friends, former teammates, and the hockey community during this difficult time."

Baun scored one of the most historic overtime goals for the Leafs in Game 6 with an ankle fracture in 1964, leading the team to win the Stanley Cup for the third consecutive time.

At the time of his decisive shot, his right leg was taped up and frozen after breaking his fibula earlier in the game against the Detroit Red Wings. Throughout his career, he won four Stanley Cups, the last of which was in 1967. He played 964 games and scored 224 points.

Baun also left his mark on the ice. After retiring, he became a farmer, and as a good friend of Tim Horton, he granted franchises for several donut shop locations in Pickering, Ontario.

The hockey league stated, "His legacy of kindness and compassion will be cherished and remembered."

The former Leafs player received an honorary doctorate in law from the Ontario Tech University in 2007.
