Floodwaters inundated many parts of the Greek coastal city of Volos today, Thursday, for the second time this month following heavy rainfall on the previous day.
The Greek meteorological service (Meteo) stated that the city overlooking the Aegean Sea received 113 millimeters of rain by Wednesday afternoon, with rain continuing into the evening.
Residents were trapped in their homes as the streets turned into rivers carrying stones, tree branches, debris, and even cars towards the sea. Many people spent the evening without electricity, and driving was banned.
The Mayor of Volos, Achilleas Beos, told the Greek public radio and television (ERT) this morning that "human lives are at risk, and the world is in danger." He added that about 80% of the city is without electricity.
He further stated that the city's authorities are working to repair the damage and clear the debris and mud caused by the flooding that occurred earlier in the week, but the sewage systems can no longer cope with the amount of rain.
