At least 24 people were killed and dozens injured, and thousands of flights were delayed due to bad weather conditions in Japan, the United States, and Canada.

In Japan, authorities said yesterday, Saturday, December 24, 2022, that the heavy snowfall that recently fell on northern Japan and other areas caused the death of 13 people and injured more than 80 people, leaving more than 10,000 homes without electricity.

The Meteorological Agency also warned that snowstorms and high waves in northern Japan and along the coast of the Sea of Japan could cause snowfall up to 60 centimeters deep, according to Reuters.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said that by late Saturday afternoon, more than 30 people were seriously injured and more than 50 suffered minor injuries.

The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation also reported that train and airplane services were disrupted in northern Japan, and some parts of the central and western regions experienced traffic disturbances.

In the United States, a severe winter storm caused the deaths of at least 11 people across the country with falling temperatures, intensified winds, downed power lines, and power outages.

In the same context, the American news network CNN said that hundreds of thousands of Americans were left in the dark after winds and heavy snow caused by a winter storm destroyed power lines, noting that drivers faced danger nationwide.

Also, the winter storm sweeping most of the United States caused snowstorms, freezing rain, floods, and life-threatening cold. It also led to the cancellation of more than 5,700 domestic and international flights on Friday, according to the tracking site FlightAware.

In Canada, strong winds, freezing rain, and heavy snowfall caused school closures on Friday and power outages in homes.

Air travel was affected, with many flights canceled after a fierce winter storm swept across the country, prompting Canadian authorities to urge citizens to stay indoors as weather conditions worsened.
