The European Union's Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, expressed concern on Tuesday about the risks of terrorist attacks in the bloc similar to the attack witnessed in Paris on Saturday evening, particularly the "threat to places of worship".
In a speech during a meeting of EU interior ministers in Brussels, the commissioner said her assessment of the situation is based on the evaluations of member states, and the current situation after several countries raised the alert level regarding the risk of attacks on their territories.
The assessment is also based on the "massive increase in anti-Semitism and hatred against Muslims," in addition to the rise in "terrorist content on the internet".
Johansson said, "With the ongoing war between Israel and (Hamas) and the polarization it causes in our societies, and with the holiday season approaching, the risks of terrorist attacks in the European Union are immense. We have unfortunately seen this recently in Paris and have seen it before as well."
The Swedish commissioner expressed "deep concern" about the "terrorist threat," without providing further details, emphasizing "we must confront this matter together."
A German-Filipino tourist was killed on Saturday and two others were injured near the Eiffel Tower in Paris in a knife attack carried out by a French-Iranian extremist who said he committed the act "in response to the persecution of Muslims worldwide".
