The Philippine authorities decided to close schools in the capital "Manila" and many surrounding cities and villages due to the emission of sulfur dioxide and volcanic fog from the "Taal" volcano at higher than normal rates.
The Philippine "ABS-CBN" network reported today, Saturday, that at least 58 students were hospitalized for healthcare in the past days due to chest pain and difficulty breathing because of the volcanic fog.
The health authorities also urged citizens in the capital to stay indoors and wear masks when leaving home if necessary, and issued a warning yesterday to pilots against flying near the volcano's crater due to the risks of sudden explosions and ash columns.
It is noted that more than 100,000 people were displaced from their homes and dozens of flights were canceled in 2020 after the volcano became highly active, emitting ash and smoke that reached a height of 15 kilometers in the air.
