Chinese President Xi Jinping complained to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about alleged media leaks, accusing him of harming diplomatic relations.

The two had a discussion on Wednesday at an event during the G20 summit in Indonesia, and the media managed to record the brief conversation.

Xi also told Trudeau through a translator: "Everything we discuss has been leaked to the newspaper; this is not appropriate," adding: "This is not how the conversation went. If there is sincerity on your part," at which point Trudeau interrupted saying: "We believe in free, open, and frank dialogue and that is what we will continue to do. We will continue to look forward to working constructively together, but there will be things we disagree on." Xi responded through the translator: "Let's create the conditions first." Then the two shook hands after the brief conversation.

Also, Trudeau spoke with Xi on Tuesday, and his office later said he raised concerns about Chinese interference in Canada, following allegations from actual police forces operating in Canada and China interfering in the 2019 general election.

International media reports also cited a government source saying the two discussed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, North Korea, and climate change during a brief meeting in a crowded room at the summit.
