While Canada announced the facilitation of renewing the residencies of Turks and Syrians on its territory after a month of the border area earthquake, two German ministers headed to Canada to inquire about the immigration law there, to benefit from it in upcoming plans of the German government.
German Labor Minister Hubertus Heil and his colleague, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, arrived in Canada yesterday, Sunday (March 19, 2023).
This comes in the context of preparing a draft for a new law to recruit specialized technical staff, expected to be approved by the German Cabinet before Easter, according to the current plans of the German government.
The two ministers, belonging to Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party, first headed to the Canadian capital Ottawa, then will continue the trip to Toronto city on Monday evening.
The two ministers will hold talks with representatives of the Canadian government, visit companies, and hold meetings with experts in integration.
The German government is currently preparing an amendment that would facilitate travel for people coming to Germany for work purposes.
The opportunities available to workers wishing to immigrate to Canada have changed repeatedly over past decades, and the rules in force strongly depend on the current needs of the labor market. There are generally good opportunities for younger immigrants with qualifications and good language skills, but some fields are currently suffering from a shortage of trained workers similar to the situation in Germany. Apart from this, there are work visas for seasonal workers who work in agriculture.
