Canada is expanding its federal resettlement programs to include language training, orientation, employment assistance, and other forms of support for Ukrainians as they settle in their new communities, says Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.

Fraser wrote on Twitter on Monday, "Starting April 1, we are also launching support services at major airports to provide Ukrainians with assistance and important arrival information, including in their language."

"We are working with our partners in the provinces and territories, the Canadian Ukrainian community, the business community, and settlement organizations across the country to develop more ways to support those in Canada, as Ukraine bravely defends their homeland against (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war."

The Canadian Ukrainian Emergency Travel Authorization (CUAET) pathway began accepting applications on March 17, less than two weeks ago, and reports say it has already received nearly 60,000 applications from Ukrainians and their relatives.

CUAET allows Ukrainian refugees to work and study for up to 3 years

Fraser wrote earlier this month on Twitter: "With this new program, those fleeing Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine will be able to stay in Canada for up to three years and be eligible for free work and study permits."

Canada has increased its capacity to process immigration applications in Europe and sent mobile biometric teams to Warsaw, Vienna, and Bucharest to collect fingerprints and photos of potential Ukrainian refugees in its efforts to ensure proper security precautions with rising applications.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) officials also confirmed that Ottawa has established temporary pop-up windows to collect biometrics in addition to the usual IRCC visa application centre network.

Canadian businesses and employers can now add jobs for Ukrainians in the Canadian online job bank.

"We are working with partners, including provinces and territories, the business community, the Canadian Ukrainian community, and settlement organizations on the best ways to support Ukrainians," Fraser tweeted.

"We stand with Ukraine and will provide a safe haven for those who want to come to Canada."

Canada has pledged to accept an unlimited number of Ukrainian refugees—and could see a huge influx of new arrivals as the Russian-Ukrainian war is considered the largest attack on a European country since World War II.

Under the Canadian Ukrainian Emergency Travel Authorization, Ukrainians can come to Canada, undergo background checks and security screenings, stay, and apply for open work permits, facilitating quick hiring by employers.

Earlier this year, IRCC announced that any Ukrainian already in Canada before the war started on a temporary basis can also apply to extend their status as a visitor, student, or worker.
