Prime Minister Doug Ford will soon announce his new ministers as the 43rd Parliament of Ontario takes the constitutional oath.
Ford chose his government after the local elections on June 2 in a victory that saw leaders of the National and Liberal parties step down after embarrassing losses.
Not much is known about the government Ford plans to reveal later today, but there is speculation that he will expand his executive council, which included 28 members in his first term.
Ford now has 83 Conservatives at his disposal, six more seats than the 2018 election and 16 more than he had when voters cast their ballots earlier this month.
Some have suggested that Sylvia Jones, who recently served as Ontario’s Attorney General, is likely to be considered for the role overseeing the billions in planned hospital infrastructure spending.
Political analyst Scott Reid told CTV News Toronto earlier this week that he sees Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney or Energy Minister Todd Smith as other possibilities.
Reid said regarding the frontline position that the right candidate should be someone who can stand up to officials and stakeholders and answer tough questions.
He said, "Because there will be tough days for that portfolio." There is another ministerial position which is Education.
Stephen Lecce has held the position since June 2019 and was particularly sensitive during the province-wide teachers’ strike in 2020 and the COVID-19 school closures the same year.
The Prime Minister himself remained silent about any major cabinet changes before Friday’s ceremony, saying only that his team looks "great" in his second term.
Ford said about potential ministerial positions a day after his announcement as Prime Minister: "We will sit down and look at each region separately, and look at each person’s skill level."
The ceremony will be held at Queen’s Park in the morning, followed by statements from the head of state.
