The police said that a car carrying containers of flammable materials crashed into the gate of the Russian embassy in the Romanian capital in the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing a fire and killing the driver.
The car crashed into the gate around six in the morning on Wednesday but did not enter the Bucharest embassy complex. A video clip after the incident showed the car ablaze while security personnel were running in the area.
The police stated that firefighters who arrived at the scene managed to extinguish the fire but the driver died at the scene. The public prosecutor of the case, who arrived at the scene for journalists, said that several containers containing flammable materials were found inside the car, which will be examined by forensic experts. Prosecutor Bogdan Staicu said the incident is under investigation and an autopsy will be conducted.
The Russian embassy expressed its condolences to the driver's family in a statement after the incident. The statement said, "We must regretfully announce that whatever the driver's motives." "There is no doubt that he committed this act under the influence of a burst of anti-Russian hysteria regarding an organized provocation in the city of Bucha."
