VIA Rail said it will resume some trains between Ottawa and Toronto and between Toronto and Montreal today, Tuesday, on a modified schedule after a CN derailment led to train service being halted due to the blizzard that affected the area.
The company also said it experienced a derailment on the Kingston Subdivision near Grafton on December 24, which halted train movements including passenger service.
A company spokesperson also said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa: "Our crews are working tirelessly around the clock in very challenging conditions to return the track to a safe and usable condition as soon as possible. At this stage, we aim to have one of the two sets of tracks operational later tonight, allowing some traffic, passengers, and freight to resume on December 27."
VIA Rail said the revised schedules for trains operating on Tuesday will be posted on its website.
The blizzard that began on Thursday hit southern and eastern Ontario with a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds. Roads were impassable, entire provinces were closed, a large part of the busy Highway 401 was shut down, as well as part of Highway 417 east of Ottawa.
The storm also caused power outages for hundreds of thousands of Canadians, and tens of thousands remain without power on Gift Opening Day. Nearly 27,000 Hydro One customers, including over 2,000 in eastern Ontario, remain without power, as well as about 2,000 Hydro Quebec customers in the Outaouais area.
VIA Rail provided confirmation of reopening its tracks by tomorrow, as VIA Rail plans to operate TO-OTT and TO-MTL trains on December 27 with a modified schedule that will be available on its website and affected customers will be notified as soon as possible.
