Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez condemned what he described as bullying practiced by the social media site Facebook against Canadian citizens.
The social media giant had repeated its threat yesterday to prevent Canadians from viewing and sharing news content on the social network.
Meta, the owner of Facebook, made these statements following the Canadian House of Commons' approval yesterday, Wednesday, of Bill C-18.
It is worth noting that in a written statement issued immediately after the approval of Bill C-18 following the third reading in the Canadian Parliament, Meta stated, "that it wants to avoid being subjected to negotiations imposed by Ottawa that do not take into account the value we provide to publishers."
The legislation proposed by the Liberal Party leading the Canadian government under Justin Trudeau aims to force the giant digital platforms, primarily Google and Facebook, to sign fair compensation agreements with Canadian media in exchange for sharing their journalistic content.
Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said the Canadian government intends to ensure that giant digital companies, such as Facebook and Google, pay Canadian media for reusing their news content.
It is noted that the bill is on its way to the Canadian Senate, and the company owning Facebook now wants to pressure its members.
