Many government ministers are expected to launch a new federal dental insurance plan today that will provide direct benefits to eligible Canadian residents, although the first claims will not be processed until May.

Government officials said the new program will be implemented gradually throughout 2024.

Officials briefed the Canadian press before today’s announcement on condition of anonymity.

The insurance plan is also a key pillar in the confidence and supply deal the Liberals made with the New Democrats to secure opposition party support on key votes.

The deal calls for a plan that would provide direct dental benefits to Canadian residents with a family income under $90,000 and without private insurance.

Applications are also expected to open early next week, starting with eligible seniors over 87 years old, but it will take months before they can start claiming benefits.

The Liberals promised the New Democratic Party that the government would launch the insurance plan for seniors, children under 18, and people with disabilities by 2024.

Also, although it will be months before many eligible people can register and start receiving care, New Democratic Party health critic Don Davies says his party is very happy to have a tangible program in place by the deadline.

All uninsured Canadians who fall below the family income threshold are also expected to qualify for the plan in 2025.
