There will be Canada Day celebrations for the first time in three years in July, but they will not take place in the Parliament building.
Canadian Heritage said in a press release on Monday that the main stage for Canada Day this year will be at LeBreton Flats Park west of downtown Ottawa.
The statement said, "The Centre Block rehabilitation project means that the main stage for Canada Day is moving to a new location in the heart of the capital," and that "the iconic Parliament building will host some activities." No further details were provided about the activities the Parliament will host.
The Parliament building was the location of the main stage for Canada Day for more than 50 years, but on July 1, LeBreton Flats will host the daytime celebration and the evening show, among other activities.
The statement said another new location, the Zeppi festival site, "will provide programming for the whole family."
Wellington Street in front of Parliament and vehicle traffic has been closed since the Freedom Convoy protests that occupied downtown Ottawa for three weeks in January and February.
Before the pandemic, officials were planning to move the main stage for Canada Day to nearby Majors Hill Park due to the planned construction on the hill.
The Centre Block construction project is expected to be completed between 2030 and 2031. The $5 billion project is the largest and most complex rehabilitation project in Canadian history.
