Announced the return of the Maple Leaf Train in collaboration with VIA Rail to operation.
This means that for the first time since 2020, passengers will be able to board the train at Union Station in Toronto (and a few other stations in the GTA) before arriving at Penn Station in New York City.
Roger Harris, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Revenue and Chief Commercial Officer of Amtrak, said in a press release issued on Monday, "On board the Maple Leaf, customers can enjoy some of the best views in the country through the beautiful Hudson River Valley, New York's wine country, and the stunning valleys in the Finger Lakes region, before crossing the U.S./Canada border near Niagara Falls,”
The route takes about 12 hours and 30 minutes with stops in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Buffalo, and downtown New York.
However, there are some rules passengers should be aware of before making a trip to the Big Apple.
Every passenger must wear a mask on the train while on Canadian soil, and non-U.S. citizens will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 either using a vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or the World Health Organization.
On the way back to Canada, all passengers must use the ArriveCAN app and resume wearing their masks once the train crosses the border.
You can purchase a Maple Leaf train ticket through Amtrak or VIA Rail - the latter said it is "delighted" to restore service between the two countries.
“After two years of the pandemic, people are eager to travel again this summer, and the Maple Leaf experience allows passengers on both sides of the border to book a beautiful vacation and travel out of Toronto on VIA Rail trains that can connect them across Canada,” said Michael Acosta, Senior Director of Commercial Affairs at VIA Rail in a statement.
Tickets are now available, and the first train heading to the United States departs Union Station at 8:20 a.m. on June 28.
