A report from the US Department of Agriculture, issued this December, revealed a sharp increase in Canada's share of US lentil exports during 2023, rising to 50%, compared to 41% in the previous year.
Specifically, during the period from July to October, 44,000 tons of products were shipped, compared to the volume of shipments for the entire last season, which amounted to 76,000 tons, according to reports from "The Western Producer".
At the same time, this volume may be somewhat inaccurate, as a fairly large portion of US lentils is not exported to Canada, but rather passes through the country in transit to avoid paying a 10% import duty upon delivery to India.
Canada also plays a key role in purchasing peas in the United States, ranking second after China in 2023/24, importing 26,000 tons of legumes during the first 4 months of the current season.
Additionally, the US Department of Agriculture announced a 23% increase in the average monthly prices of US lentils during the fiscal year 2023/2024, and expects them to rise further. This trend is explained by the global decline in lentil supplies and the implementation of a strong export program in the United States.
