Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand confirmed that her country seeks to enhance sovereignty over the Arctic through diplomacy and military means.
Anand said in statements to the Canadian CBC News network today, Monday, that she is holding consultations with the defense ministers of Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark regarding the security of the region in light of the Russian aggression on Ukraine.
She added that she will soon present a spending plan to modernize the North American Aerospace Defense Command, a binational organization between the United States and Canada established to defend the continent against air attacks.
She pointed out that Ottawa has committed to working with the United States to replace the Northern Warning System with technology that ensures the next generation of radar systems to detect targets at long distances, and that her country will award a contract to purchase (88) new fighter aircraft this year.
