Canada intensifies its request to allow humanitarian aid to Gaza

Canadian government officials have increasingly made urgent calls for Israel to allow humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip or to cease fighting altogether.

In a statement issued on October 14, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau focused on the deteriorating situation in Gaza, deeming the humanitarian corridor in the region essential to meet the urgent needs of civilians.

Trudeau also stated that international law and the rights of workers, such as doctors and journalists, must be respected.

On October 15, Israel again urged civilians in northern Gaza to evacuate the area and move south from the densely populated small area, in anticipation of a potential ground military operation.

The United Nations rejected this request, warning that it would lead to devastating humanitarian consequences. On the other hand, the indiscriminate Israeli bombing also resulted in the deaths of 11 local UN officials.

Israel stated that it aims to destroy the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, but does not wish to harm civilians. Approximately 2,700 Palestinian civilians have been killed in Israeli bombings on Gaza, including hundreds of children.

Meanwhile, Hamas attacks have killed around 1,400 people in Israel. An Israeli army spokesperson said that about 155 Israelis are being held hostage in Gaza.

Federal Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly urged countries in the region to reach an agreement that would allow for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor.

Joly also announced that it is critically important for food, water, and fuel to reach Gaza, as it is currently one of the worst places in the world.

Both Trudeau and Joly affirmed Ottawa's position that Israel has the right to defend itself within the bounds of international law.

Many liberal MPs also expressed their support for establishing a humanitarian corridor and imposing restrictions on Israeli military operations and the blockade on the Gaza Strip.

Israel commanded a complete blockade on the territory, preventing shipments of essential goods such as food and water.

Liberal MPs Iqra Khalid, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, and Yasir Naqvi issued statements calling for an end to the violence and assistance to civilians.

Meanwhile, at the federal New Democratic Party conference in Hamilton, Ontario, delegates supported a proposal calling for a ceasefire and the restoration of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
