Canada wins its first medal in ski jumping in history

Canada won its first medal in ski jumping in Olympic history, taking the bronze medal in the mixed team competition on Monday at the Beijing Olympics.

Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes' final jump secured the bronze medal for Canada in an event that marked Canada's first Olympic medal win in the sport. Abigail Strate, Matthew Soukup, and Alexandria Loutitt were the other Canadian ski jumpers.

All four Canadians are from Calgary.

Canada scored 844.6 points over Japan (836.3) to earn the bronze.

Boyd-Clowes is competing in his fourth Olympic Games, while Strate, Soukup, and Loutitt are competing in their first.

Slovenia won the gold medal and the Russians took silver. The Canadians train in Slovenia.

This was Canada's sixth medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Canada's previous best result in Olympic ski jumping was Horst Bulau finishing seventh in Calgary in 1988.
