Canada announced its approval to start using the two-dose Medicago vaccine, which can be administered to adults aged 18 to 64 years.
Canada thus registered itself as the first country in the world to allow the use of a plant-based COVID-19 vaccine.
The new vaccine underwent a study conducted on 24,000 adults which found that the vaccine was 71% effective in preventing COVID-19, although this was before the emergence of the Omicron variant. Side effects were mild, including fever and fatigue.
