The Canadian basketball team won the bronze medal for the first time in its history after defeating its American counterpart 127-118 after overtime, with the original time ending in a tie between the two teams, in the third-place match of the basketball World Cup being held in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan.
The American team missed the services of Paolo Banchero, the best rookie of the year in the NBA, and the best defender of the year Jaren Jackson Jr. and forward Brandon Ingram due to illness.
NBA players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks dominated the overtime, scoring 11 points for Canada.
Brooks, who will play for the Houston Rockets next season, boosted the Canadian team's total by scoring 39 points, which is the highest for him in the tournament, along with 4 rebounds and 5 assists.
Anthony Edwards, a player for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the top scorer for the American team, scored 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Austin Reaves added 23 points, and 3 other players scored in double digits.
Canada achieved many milestones in the tournament, including its first appearance in the semifinals, along with qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for the first time since 2000.
The United States, the five-time defending world champion, finished the tournament better than the seventh place it achieved in 2019, which is its worst result ever in a major international tournament.
