The federal government says all Canadian peacekeepers are safe and have been accounted for following the second day of deadly anti-UN protests in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Department of National Defence and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed the safety of all Canadian personnel in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday as the United Nations reported that three peacekeepers were killed in the violence.

Dozens of people were killed and injured during what UN officials described as multiple attacks on peacekeeping bases and facilities in the country.

Protesters accused the peacekeeping mission of failing to protect civilians amid escalating violence in eastern Congo and called on UN forces to leave.

There were allegations that peacekeepers opened fire on civilians, prompting UN officials to promise an investigation even as they sought to protect their facilities and personnel.

The United Nations says Canada had nine police officers and eight military officers in Congo at the end of March.

The Department of Defence said six Armed Forces members are currently there.

Administration spokeswoman Jessica Lamirandi said in an email: "All African Union personnel are safe, and there have been no reports of injuries."

"No Canadian Armed Forces personnel were involved in the violence and are currently sheltering in their homes."

The Canadian Police, through Global Affairs Canada, reported that "all Canadian police personnel ... are safe." No further details were added.

United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said on Tuesday that hundreds of attackers again targeted UN force bases, known by their French acronym MONUSCO, in Goma as well as other parts of North Kivu "fueled by hostile statements and threats made by individuals and groups against the United Nations, especially on social media."
