The Canadian government announced an outbreak of listeria bacteria, resulting in the deaths of two people and the hospitalization of nine others, according to what was published by the Izvestia magazine.
Laboratory analyses confirmed that 12 cases among the reported instances were caused by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Nine of the infected individuals were hospitalized, and two died; most reported consuming plant-based drinks branded Silk and Great Value, according to a statement from the Canadian government. There were 10 reported cases of the illness in Ontario, two in Quebec, and Nova Scotia, and these plant-based beverages have been withdrawn from the market.
The statement confirms that it is not unlikely to report new cases of the illness, as the incubation period for the infection can range from 9 to 35 days, and this outbreak may not be confined to the provinces or territories where the disease is spreading because the mentioned plant-based beverages that were withdrawn were distributed nationwide.
Listeriosis is an infection caused by the Gram-positive bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, contracted through the consumption of contaminated food. This bacteria can enter the body by consuming contaminated dairy products, fresh milk, raw vegetables, raw meats, or frozen foods. Infected individuals may experience fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Listeriosis can cause miscarriage or premature birth in pregnant women and even the death of the newborn.
