The Canadian federal government announced a significant reduction in the number of new permanent immigrants that Canada will accept over the next three years, which will temporarily slow down population growth in Canada.
In a new move, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the government's decision to cut the quotas for permanent residents by a substantial 21% starting next year, indicating that this step is taken to ensure stable population growth.
Trudeau stated: We recognize the importance of immigration in supporting Canadian society, but it is also essential to achieve a balance that allows us to manage resources effectively and gives us the opportunity to improve the essential services that everyone needs.
For his part, Immigration Minister Mark Miller clarified that the new plan was a direct response to the increasing criticisms facing immigration policy, marking the first such initiative in years. He confirmed that the government took into account the aspirations of citizens, as polls showed that 58% of Canadians believe the country is accepting too many immigrants.
However, the decision faced criticism from some civil society organizations and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, which argued that immigration is a fundamental factor in driving economic growth, warning of the impact of this reduction on the future of the economy.
