The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that the number of migrants to the UK recorded a new record high exceeding all expectations.

Figures released by the office revealed that by December 2022, migration estimates reached a record level of 745,000 people.

The previous estimate for the year ending in December 2022 was 606,000, but the Office for National Statistics has since revised this number upwards due to "unexpected patterns" in migrant behavior.

The new figures also revealed that net migration to the UK reached 672,000 in the year up to June 2023, up from 607,000 in the previous 12 months.

This increase also contributed to granting 1.2 million migrants visas mainly from outside the European Union to enter the UK for study, work, or to escape conflict or persecution.

The Office for National Statistics estimates that 508,000 people migrated.

The figure of 672,000 for the year ending in June 2023 represents nearly three times the pre-Brexit average of between 200,000 to 250,000 annually, undermining the 2019 government statement commitment to reduce the overall net migration rate from its then level of 226,000.
