The Liberal Party in the province of British Columbia (BC Liberals) officially announced its name change to "BC United" ("British Columbia United" BC United) after the majority of the party's voting members voted in favor of this change.
80% of the 8,100 voters, out of about 45,000 party members, voted in favor of the name change, where voting began on Sunday and ended yesterday.
This wind of change was also initiated earlier this year by the new Liberal leader, Kevin Falcon, during the leadership race of his party, which forms the official opposition in the legislative assembly in Victoria. The new party name will be ratified at the beginning of 2023.
Also, Falcon stated that he is excited about the idea of the party changing its name. Deputy party leader, Caroline Elliott, pointed out that this new name is just part of the "political renewal" begun by the Liberals after losing a large number of seats in the last general legislative elections held in the province in October 2020.
Professor Nicholas Kenny, a history professor at Simon Fraser University, also said that this name change means several things, as the party wants to breathe a new identity and avoid confusion with the Canadian Liberal Party.
The Canadian Liberal Party is the party of the federal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Like others, Kenny believes that the Liberal Party in British Columbia is looking to move a little further to the right of the political spectrum.
Additionally, the political observer in this regard points to a closeness between Kevin Falcon and Pierre Poilievre, the new leader of the Canadian Conservative Party who forms the official opposition in the House of Commons in Ottawa.
