Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a reshuffling of his cabinet, with two-thirds of the ministerial portfolios changing and seven new ministers being appointed in place of seven others.
The spin doctors say this is a reset by the Liberal government as a renewed focus on the economy and affordability, as Trudeau stated that this is the right team to build a strong future.
Anita Anand, the Minister of Defence who led the Canadian response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will leave the defence portfolio to become President of the Treasury Board, replacing Mona Fortier who has left the government, while Bill Blair, the former Minister of Public Safety, will take over her position.
Dominique LeBlanc will take on the Public Safety portfolio, and former Minister of Immigration Sean Fraser will assume the position of Minister of Housing, with Marc Miller taking over the Immigration portfolio.
Newcomer to the government Arif Virani will take on the Justice portfolio, replacing outgoing Minister David Lametti.
Mark Holland, who was the government House Leader, will take on the Health portfolio, while former Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos is the new Minister of Public Services and Procurement.
Other new ministers include Gary Anandasangaree, who will take on Crown-Indigenous Relations; Terry Beach, in a new portfolio called Citizen Services; Tourism Minister Soraya Martinez Ferrada; Mental Health and Addictions Minister Yaara Saks; Families Minister Gina Sugappo; and Small Business Minister Rishi Valdez.
Only seven ministers will retain their portfolios: Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hajdu, Minister for Women and Gender Equality Marci Ien, and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.
