The Spanish Barcelona Municipality announced the severance of all its institutional relations with the occupying entity in protest against the aggression on Gaza, stating that its decision will remain in effect until the "ceasefire and guarantee of the rights of the Palestinian people."
The decision, approved by the city council yesterday, Friday, stated that all attacks on civilians are condemned, as well as "any collective punishment, forced displacement, or systematic destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, in addition to cutting off energy, water, food, and medical supplies to the people of the Gaza Strip."
Barcelona viewed that the main obstacles to lasting peace are the occupation and colonization of Palestinian lands and the denial of the rights of the Palestinian people, according to the decision.
This is not the first time Barcelona has cut its ties with Israel, despite its association with a twinning agreement with the city of Tel Aviv for 25 years. In last February, the then mayor of the city, "Ada Colau," announced the suspension of the twinning agreement and wrote to the Prime Minister of the occupying state, Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that this decision will remain valid until Israel puts an end to its violations of the rights of the Palestinian people and fully fulfills its obligations under international law.
