As part of efforts to address toxic drug supplies, the opioid crisis, and the increasing number of overdoses, a safe drug consumption site is scheduled to open in Sudbury in the next four weeks.
It has recently received federal approval and is now awaiting the province to operate at full capacity.
Neil Stephen, Director of Consumption and Treatment Services at the Réseau Access Network, said: "Really, the purpose of the safe consumption site is a safe and non-discriminatory area where people can come and use drugs they have already obtained and purchased on their own, and they just come here to use them in a safe environment under the supervision of medical professionals."
It is also awaiting regional funding to expand operations to provide treatment services as well. "We are also now waiting, after the elections, for the new party group to be sworn in, to review our regional request and officially obtain this regional funding.
