The College of Nurses in Ontario can now allow internationally educated nurses to practice their profession while they are seeking full registration. Also, Minister of Health Sylvia Jones announced today the start of this change aimed at stabilizing the healthcare system. The minister had previously requested the College of Nurses of Ontario to draft regulations to increase the number of nurses in the province, which have now been approved by the government. Additionally, the college will also have greater flexibility in allowing retired or non-practicing nurses to return to work. In the same context, Jones also asked the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario to propose ways to obtain more working doctors in the province, and stated that doctors licensed in other provinces and territories can receive temporary registration for three months to work in Ontario. Furthermore, she announced a number of other changes that will come into effect on January 1, including imposing time restrictions on health regulatory colleges - responsible for ensuring that regulated health professionals provide health services in a safe, professional, and ethical manner - to make registration decisions and preventing them from requiring a Canadian work experience document as a registration condition.
