A 16-year-old boy is in custody after stabbing a boy of the same age at a high school in central Alberta on Monday.
STARS airlifted the victim to Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton and said he was in critical condition.
The victim's mother, Shanice Rowan, told CTV News that her son was stabbed in the stomach, just above his pelvis.
The school was closed after the incident while police investigated and classes were canceled for the day. Canadian police said the suspect was arrested.
Baron said the stabbing took place in the library and was witnessed by staff and students, but he did not know what led to this painful incident.
He added that the school will be closed on Tuesday and counseling will be provided for students and staff. "I have been in education for 39 years and this is the first time this kind of thing has happened. This is very unusual. It is very upsetting for staff, students, and families. As I say, this is a tragic incident."
Baron said he expects school security to be discussed at an upcoming board meeting, but he did not provide any details on any changes.
