What is OSAP ?

OSAP is a financial aid program for students in the Canadian province of Ontario. OSAP pays grants to full-time or part-time students at universities or colleges in two ways: the first is grants and the second is loans.

What are the costs covered by OSAP?

OSAP covers university or college costs such as tuition fees, books, living expenses, and childcare costs for students enrolled in universities and colleges.

Who can apply for OSAP ?

OSAP applicants include Canadians, permanent residents, and persons approved for refugee status in Canada. OSAP does not apply to international students who do not hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency. This program is only suitable for residents of Ontario.

What are the criteria on which OSAP is calculated?

Grants and loans are calculated based on university education costs and the number of hours the student studies, as well as the total hours of the study program. Finally, it depends on the financial status of the applicant and the parents.

The OSAP program itself determines the amount allocated for grants and for loans.

When are OSAP loans paid ?

The student does not repay the portion related to grants. The loan portion begins repayment six months after graduation, and then monthly thereafter. 

Can a student accept grants without loans ?

Yes, a student can accept the grant only without the loan.
