An analysis conducted by the Canadian Ministry of Transport in June reported that 6.6 million vehicles out of 33.3 million registered vehicles in Canada in 2019 were targeted for recall but were not repaired, which is one in every five vehicles.

In some cases, the condition of the recalled vehicle could potentially jeopardize the safety of its passengers and other road users.

The ministry proposed new rules in its report to require manufacturers that issue safety recalls to promptly publish relevant information on their website to raise awareness and address the issue.

The proposed rules also require automobile manufacturers to provide a search tool for vehicle inspection numbers on their website to provide information about recalls.

According to the "Canadian Automobile Association" (CAA), a non-profit organization, only a minority of vehicle owners are notified about recalls, especially if the targeted vehicle is used and its new owner is unknown to the dealership that originally sold it.

However, the aforementioned association indicates that many recall requests are related to minor issues that do not require immediate action or do not pose a threat to anyone's life.
