A woman from Ontario, who was among a group of women and children returning to Canada six months ago from a detention camp in northeastern Syria, has been charged with a terrorism-related offense.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (federal police) stated that the charge was brought against Amara Ahmed, 29, after an investigation conducted by its Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET / EISN).

“On April 4, 2023, upon her return to Canada from Syria, Amara Ahmed was arrested under an undertaking not to disturb the public peace in terrorism-related matters. She was later released on bail pending her future court appearance,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement issued last Friday.

“On October 5, 2023, the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team for the southwestern Greater Toronto Area arrested Ms. Ahmed in Milton, Ontario, in connection with her alleged involvement in activities of the ‘Islamic State’ organization,” the police added in its statement.

“Amara Ahmed is facing the following charge: participating in the activities of a terrorist group, contrary to section 83.18 of the Criminal Code,” the statement added.

Amara Ahmed appeared before a judge in Brampton, Ontario, and was released. The police statement did not specify the date of her appearance. She is to appear in court again on November 17.

The group, which included four women, including Amara Ahmed, and ten children, arrived in Montreal on April 4 after having been detained for years at the Roj camp under the control of Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria. Three of the women were arrested upon their arrival and were then released under conditions.

Amara Ahmed appeared before Judge Katherine Hawke in Brampton on April 11 and was released on bail after being subjected to strict conditions.
