Yukon fire officials said they hope for a change in the weather to work in their favor as a massive fire erupts near the village of Mayo, which was evacuated on Sunday afternoon.
For her part, Haley Ritchie, a wildfire information officer in Yukon, said the Talbot Creek fire is located about four kilometers outside the small village and is still out of control, with aerial firefighting efforts focused on managing the fire and keeping it away from the town.
Ritchie also said that tankers and helicopters have dropped water and fire retardants to slow the growth of the fire, while crews from the wildfire management are preparing for controlled burns if conditions allow.
Ritchie added that they have more than 40 individuals assigned to the Talbot Creek fire, along with six air tankers and four helicopters.
Officials are anticipating a change in the weather today, with favorable winds and cooler nighttime temperatures that they hope will reduce the spread of the fire.
There are currently 126 active fires across Yukon, draining resources, but she expressed gratitude for the local crews and out-of-province teams that have helped with the response.
