Farmers and ranchers are facing a drought problem in Saskatchewan, Canada. To support them, the provincial water agency has relaxed the conditions regarding the use of certain water resources.

Accordingly, agricultural producers in the province are, as of yesterday, entitled to access municipal drinking water reservoirs in rural areas without needing a permit.

In addition, farmers and ranchers who own or operate land near water sources, such as wells, lakes, swamps, streams, and rivers, may use these sources without the need for a permit.

The director of the "Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association," Grant McLellan, welcomed these easing measures, especially since some areas, particularly in the southwest of the province, are facing a seventh consecutive year of drought.

McLellan added that he recognizes these measures are exceptional, but he hopes they will not be last-resort measures.

“We are still waiting for the government's response regarding further easing solutions in the coming weeks,” McLellan said.

For his part, Saskatchewan's Minister of Agriculture, David Marit, stated that there is a need to act quickly at all levels to explore additional easing options.

The latest report from the Government of Saskatchewan on crops stated that "drought can be taxing on farmers."

McLellan also reminded that it is important to help farmers at this time.

“As a neighbor, as a friend, as a family member, if there is an opportunity to help, please extend your hand,” said the director of the "Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association."

He also reminded that there is a free hotline to support agricultural producers known as the "Farm Stress Line." Therefore, farmers can call 18006674442 for assistance.
