Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday that his precautionary use of the notwithstanding clause in legislation aimed at preventing education workers from striking was "wrong and inappropriate."
The Prime Minister's Office stated that Trudeau emphasized to Ford the critical importance of standing up for the rights and freedoms of Canadians, including employee rights,
He added: "It has been clear that the precautionary use of the notwithstanding clause of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is wrong and inappropriate, and should only be used in the most exceptional circumstances."
