Trudeau said on Wednesday that Canada will send another $50 million worth of specialized equipment, including Canadian-made cameras for drones, to help Ukraine defend itself against the Russian invasion.

Trudeau was in Berlin for meetings with Chancellor Olaf Scholz about the response to Russia and the ongoing needs to support Ukraine. But he spoke by phone from Berlin to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to inform him of the additional aid.

Trudeau said during a press conference with Scholz: "We have obtained a number of specialized equipment, including cameras used in drones made by a Canadian company, and we will be able to start sending them in the coming days to Ukraine."

Canada had earlier said it was shipping non-lethal equipment such as vests and helmets, as well as more than $10 million worth of weapons like machine guns, rocket launchers, and hand grenades.

Trudeau acknowledged that getting the equipment into Ukraine was not easy.

He said, "There are challenges at the border regarding safely getting the equipment across into Ukrainian hands." "But we are working through that with partners alongside all allies who face real logistical challenges but not insurmountable ones."

Trudeau also said that Zelensky accepted an invitation to address the Canadian Parliament.

Zelensky said on Twitter that the conversation with Trudeau focused on how to increase sanctions and pressure on Russia.

He added, "We agreed on further diplomatic steps." "Canada stands with Ukraine. We feel that every day."

This was Trudeau’s first conversation with the Ukrainian leader in six days. Trudeau praised Zelensky’s resilience and leadership as his forces try to repel the Russian invasion.

The call came 14 days after Russian troops began flowing into Ukraine in an invasion that the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said has so far killed more than 400 civilians.

On Tuesday, Zelensky posted a new video showing him standing near presidential offices in Kyiv in front of piles of sandbags and a few cars.

This was the second video of Zelensky within 24 hours showing him near the seat of power in the country; it seemed to be made to dispel any doubts about whether he had fled the city.

After the call, Trudeau visited the Berlin 17 platform, a memorial representing the railway station where 50,000 Jews were deported to ghettos, labor camps, and detention camps during the Holocaust.

Trudeau's discussion with Scholz was their first in-person meeting since Scholz replaced former Chancellor Angela Merkel in December.

They discussed the need for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the desire to end the war without further escalation. They also talked about energy security in Europe, which heavily depends on Russian oil and gas but wants to reduce Russian imports by two-thirds by the end of this year.

Logistics to move to Canada to replace that energy are difficult, so the energy talk seemed to focus more on developing clean technology and future sales of Canadian-made hydrogen to Germany.

Trudeau is also preparing to deliver a foreign policy speech at the Munich Security Conference in Berlin.

The Prime Minister's office said Trudeau will also meet with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in Poland on Thursday evening to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
