Ahmed Hussein, Minister of Housing, Diversity, and Inclusion, along with a group of Canadian officials, announced a joint investment funding amounting to approximately 132 million dollars to support the construction of more than 380 homes in the province of Ontario.
The construction process will focus on housing for Indigenous peoples and veterans as much as possible, in addition to providing different levels of accessibility and affordability.
The first residential complex will also be developed by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 organization, and the project aims to replace the current building with a nine-story accessible tower. It will include 107 units, with more than 30% of these units being affordable.
The building will also provide amenities for tenants, their families, and the community. The project will include the construction of restaurants, meeting rooms, and a gathering place. Overall, 32.1 million dollars of federal funding was provided through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF) and 1.9 million dollars from the Veteran Housing Ontario Inc. foundation.
The second group of housing projects will be managed by the Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS) organization. It will consist of nine projects serving communities throughout Ontario and creating more than 276 affordable housing units to support Indigenous peoples. Furthermore, some housing projects will aim to support Indigenous persons who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, while other projects aim to support youth, as well as Indigenous women at risk and their children. These projects will receive approximately 87 million dollars in federal funding.
On their part, the federal government and the province of Ontario also committed to providing about 3.7 million dollars through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (IPOL), a bilateral agreement, to build 45 housing units in Sault Ste. Marie and London, and the OAHS organization contributed about 7.2 million dollars in land investment and financial contribution.
It is also expected that the construction of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 residential complex will be completed by December 2023, and the OAHS foundation complexes are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
