A woman from Ontario, whose wealth is valued at $13.6 billion, has been classified as one of the richest people in the world. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index for this year was revealed, and Changpeng Zhao-C,hangpeng Zhao, the CEO of cryptocurrency, is no longer the richest Canadian on the list.
Thus, the title of the richest Canadian went to Sherry Brydson this year, as she ranked 120th on the list with a total net worth estimated at $13.6 billion. Perhaps no one had heard of her because she was not in the spotlight, but her family name is well known in the media industry.
Also, according to Bloomberg, Brydson is the largest shareholder in Woodbridge, an investment company that controls Thomson Reuters, the company that owns Reuters, one of the largest international news agencies in the world. She is also the granddaughter of media man Roy Thomson and became the heir to the family fortune when he passed away. She is known for her activism on a range of issues, including protesting Canada’s strict abortion laws in the 1970s.
In this context, she opened a Thai restaurant and health resort called Elmwood and worked in real estate, oil and gas, and aviation.
Woodbridge is headquartered in Ontario and owns two-thirds of the data and financial services provided by Thomson Reuters, which had revenues of $6.3 billion in 2021.
Brydson owns about 23 percent of Woodbridge’s assets, while her relatives own the remaining share, according to Bloomberg.
It is also worth noting that last year, Changpeng Zhao, CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, was ranked 11th among the top 20 richest people on Earth.
However, this year he dropped to 144th place, behind Brydson, with a net worth of $12.3 billion.
But who occupied the top three spots?
It is worth mentioning that Elon Musk lost the top spot to Bernard Arnault, head of Louis Vuitton, the luxury goods manufacturer. Gautam Adani came third as the richest person in the world and is the founder of the Adani Group, the largest port operator in India.
